  • Yes, Lafayette Parish is currently under a fire ban. Despite recent modifications to the statewide burn ban that allow individual parishes to opt out, all the fire chiefs in Lafayette Parish have chosen to maintain the ban. This means that open burning, such as in fire pits, bonfires, and burn piles, remains prohibited. However, outdoor cooking using contained equipment like grills is still permitted, provided safety measures are followed.

  • Here's a guide for safely burning on your property:

    1. Check Regulations: Confirm burning is allowed locally, especially during a burn ban.

    2. Prepare the Area: Clear a 10-foot space around the burn site, and create a firebreak.

    3. Water Source Ready: Have a hose or buckets of water and a fire extinguisher nearby.

    4. Burn Carefully: Start with small amounts, keep the fire controlled, and monitor the weather.

    5. Extinguish Fully: Douse the fire thoroughly with water, stir the ashes, and check for hot spots.

    6. Dispose Safely: Let ashes cool completely before disposal in a metal container.

This ensures a safe and controlled burn, minimizing fire risks.
